Athletes from Polokwane braved a chilly morning to support the Save the Rhino Training Run hosted by Polokwane Athletics Club (PAC) on Saturday.
A total of R3 000 was collected from 110 athletes who participated. PAC hosts two rhino run events annually to raise funds for the Skukuza half marathon set to take place on 1 August at Skukuza in the Kruger National Park. “We had the first event late last year and collected R4 500. A total of R7 500 will be donated to the Skukuza Athletic Club,” PAC’s Johan van Vuuren said.
The Rhino Training Run started and finished at the PAC club house. Athletes participated in a 5 km or 10 km run at a cost of R30 per entry. Those who finished the race received a medal and pocket badge.
“Everyone is a winner at the rhino run. No prize money was given and no times were recorded. It is purely a fun run to benefit the Skukuza Athletic Club and is the ideal practice run for professional as well as amateur athletes,” Van Vuuren said.
Athletes were also invited to join in a champagne brunch afterwards where delicious hamburgers were sold.
