Renovations at Seshego Stadium are underway but are seriously delayed due to protesters who last year blocked the entrance to the venue with stones and burning tyres while accusing Polokwane Municipality of allegedly using the same contractors over and over, not giving others opportunities.
Tidimalo Chuene, Communications and Marketing Manager of the municipality informed Polokwane Observer of the situation on Tuesday. She said the R9, 7 million project was supposed to be completed at the end of February. It is now scheduled for 23 March.
“The contractors had already started with the work when the protestors halted the process. We need to catch up on the time lost and the plan is to have work completed by 23 March. The upgrading of the stadium includes the building of dressing rooms as well as the installation of an irrigation system, drainage system, lighting, parameter fence and turnstiles. The pavilion seats will also be numbered to ensure total holding capacity.
“This work will ensure that the Seshego Stadium is developed to national standards that would allow it to host national and international events. The stadium would also be able to host night events after the upgrades are completed.”
She added that apart from upgrading Seshego Stadium, the municipality will implement projects to upgrade and construct sporting facilities in several rural clusters.
