Seven chess teams from Capricorn District Chess took part in the South African Junior Chess Championships in Cape Town from 4 to 7 January and three of the teams did exceptionally well, ending under the first three in the different age groups.
Players from 24 regions competed and the u.12A and u.14B-teams obtained second places while the u.14A-team won a third place.
Evané du Toit (u.10A of Curro Heuwelkruin), Kwena Nkoana (u.12A of Brussels Ngoako Primary School), Mariléne van den Bergh (u.12A of Pietersburg Laerskool), u.14As Charné Hartley of Curro Heuwelkruin, Frans-Jaco van Staden, Johan Swart of Hoërskool Pietersburg and Amogelang Moloto from Brussels Ngoako Primary School), Brilliant Ramoadi (u.14B from Jabez Christian Academy) and Lutendo Ramanala (u.14B) and Bonolo Mphahlele (u.16A), both from Mogodumo Primary School all won board prizes (first place).
“Chess players are very disciplined pupils and I am delighted to mention that the skills obtained while strategising on the chess board, reflect in their school work, especially in Mathematics,” said Frans Badenhorst, Organiser of the teams.
