Some nail biting action characterised Saturday’s Vodacom Blue Bulls match against the Emirates Lions during the Vodacom Super Rugby warm-up match at the Peter Mokaba Stadion. The Bulls won 28-24.
The Lions scored a try in the 18th minute of the game and succeeded with the conversion putting the first seven points on the score board.
It wasn’t long before a second try brought the score to 12-0 after 30 minutes into playtime.
The worried looking Bulls then upped their game producing a try and conversion to that brought the halftime score to 12-7 in favour of the Lions.
The Lions started the second half excellently crafting a counter attack from inside their own 22 metre area and sending it wide to Ruan Combrinck who stormed down the wing before sending the ball inside to former Bull Rohan Janse van Rensburg who scored.
The conversion brought the score to 19-7 and the Lions were threatening to run away with the game.
But the Bulls didn’t let this get them down and Grant Hattingh struck the first blow going over from close range with Pierre Schoeman on his shoulder.
Ten minutes from time the Bulls crafted a beautiful move, with Tian Schoeman popping the perfect inside pass to Jade Stighling who scythed his way through the defence before passing to Burger Odendaal to complete an excellent try.
The Lions equalled minutes later and scored again putting them in the lead with seconds left on the clock. The conversion was taken seconds before the hooter, and the restart was allowed given Jambo Ulengo from the Bulls the opportunity to score claiming victory for his team with a final score of 28-24.
The scorers for the Bulls were Jesse Kriel, Grant Hattingh, Burger Odendaal and Jamba Ulengo with the succesful conversions by Francois Brummer (2) and Tian Schoeman (2).
