Online and pre-entries for the annual Munnik Meerkat Mountain Bike Challenge have closed but entries can still be done prior to the race on Saturday.
The annually event is presented by members of the Munnik Farmers’ Association in collaboration with P&L Cycle Club and offers biking enthusiasts a challenging route in and around the small town of Munnik about 60 km from Polokwane.
The event not only features an enjoyable 10 km fun ride but also serves as qualifier for Limpopo colours for the more serious riders who participate in the timed races over 35 km and 70 km. Although the 10 km will not be timed, prizes will also be awarded to the first three males and females in all of its categories.
The 70 km marathon gets underway at 07:00 and the 35 km half marathon is scheduled to start at 30 minutes later. Entry fees for these races are R220 and R140 respectively. The 10 km fun ride will start at 07:45 and costs R60 per entry. R30 will allow toddlers to participate in the 3 km kiddies ride scheduled to start at 08:30.
Registration closes 30 minutes before the start of each race. Temporary licences are also available at R35.
As the Munnik Meerkat is a community initiative the organisers appealed to participants to bring along items which will be donated to a local charity at a later stage. There is a big need for tinned food, dry pasta or rice, second hand clothes and shoes, children’s toys and school supplies such as pens, pencils and crayons.
