Soccer fans in the province are divided in their support for Baroka Football Club and Polokwane City Football Club ahead of their quarterfinal Nedbank Cup match set to for 24 April at Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Since their inception, the two Limpopo based teams have never met in any cup tournament or league match and this is what the contest fans have been looking forward to.
Both teams have shown commitment in the tournament after they convincing victories in the preliminary stages of the tournament. In order to proceed to the quarterfinals Boroka beat Golden Arrows 2-0 while City trashed the inform Platinum Stars 2-1.
Independent Soccer Analyst Matome Lebea said Baroka has the advantage given their current form in the National First Division (NFD).
Baroka are currently on top of the NFD and have lost two matches out of 24 while Polokwane City Football Club are hovering around the relegation zone in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). “Based on their performance in the league I think Baroka will win the match. Polokwane City are under pressure in the own league and they will want to shift focus to the league,” Lebea said.
Avid soccer fan Steve Moaba, who loves both teams, argued that Polokwane City Football Club has what it takes to win the duel. “These are my two favourite teams in the province and it saddens me because only one team can be at the semi-finals. I am aware of Baroka’s form but City has enough experience to win such a match. Most of the players are tried and tested and I think they will deliver,” Moaba said.

Another fan, Moeti Mashalane from Moletjie said Baroka will win the match mentioning consistency as one of the key reasons. “They have been consistent throughout the season. They beat PSL teams in the Cup and not just any teams but teams that are on form and that for me is amazing. I don’t see Polokwane City Football Club stopping their onslaught,” Mashalane said.
John Selahle, a Kaizer Chiefs fan from Ga-Mashashane is confident that Polokwane City Football Club will win the match and reach their first semi-final of the tournament. “If you look at the history of the club they have never reached the semi-final of the tournament. In the past years they were knocked out in the group stages. Baroka went to the semi-finals in 2011 and I think this is Polokwane City’s season to lift a trophy. They have a good coach and seasoned players who have international caps and i am confident that they will win the match,” Selahle said.
