The old Peter Mokaba Stadium will be abuzz with excitement on Tuesday when the final leg of the Athletics South Africa (Asa) Night Series will see world famous athletes strut their stuff in the city.
The night’s thrills will start at 16:30 with exhilarating 4 x 100 m relay races for eight u.15 to u.19 boys’ and girls’ teams as part of the Asa development programme.
The official programme will start at 18:30 with 11 relay races that will feature.
“The final Night Series event was included in the domestic calendar specifically to give relay hopefuls a chance to achieve required qualifying times for major events before the South African season comes to an end,” Asa Media Relations Officer Sifiso Cele said.
The ASA Night Series meeting will include four 100 m and four 400 m relays for men and women in the senior and junior divisions as well as a a junior mixed relay, a senior women’s 800 m relay and a senior men’s 1 500 m relay.
“With a number of potential relay squads displaying promise over the last couple of seasons, all efforts around the Polokwane meeting will be directed towards ensuring that quality relay races are held with elite line-ups, in order to make it possible for the athletes to run fast times,” said Athletics South Africa president Aleck Skhosana said in a recent press release.
Asa has chosen 22 national teams to represent South Africa on Tuesday and other African countries were also invited to compete in this gripping event. These athletes include international superstars like Limpopo born Caster Semenya and Ranti Dikgale as well as Henricho Bruintjies, Wayde van Niekerk, Melissa Swanepoel and Tsholofelo Thipe.
Tickets for adults and children not in school uniforms will cost R20 per ticket, while children in school uniform will only pay R10 for entry.
