Mpho Motsepa, former Wits University cricket player reached out to aspiring cricket players in his home village of Mohodi Ga-Manthata and surrounds last Friday when he presented the Dr Motsepa Annual Primary Schools Cricket Tournament.
The event which is aimed at unearthing raw talent, saw learners from Rapoto Primary School, Masenoe Primary School, Kgotloana Primary School and Mamolele Primary School battling it out for for the floating trophy in a series of five-over matches.
In the opening match Rapoto beat Masenoe by seven wickets and Kgotloane defeated Mamolele by 31 runs to set up a thrilling semi-final. The semi-final saw Rapoto eliminating Kgotloane by 37 runs and Maseno securing a nine wicket victory against Mamolele.
Masenoe, the defending champions, retained their title after beating Rapoto by 62 runs to be crowned the 2016 champions of the Dr Motsepa Annual Primary Schools Cricket Tournament.
Motsepa, a medical doctor by profession who is presently working at the Kuruman Hospital in the Northern Cape, said with the tournament he wanted to also give aspiring cricketers a platform to showcase their talent.
“It is through such events that we are able to identify talent and take the identified players to trials in Polo-kwane so that they can compete with best players from other areas in the province for a spot in the provincial team,” Motsepa said.
During the day Motsepa, assisted by Rejoice Phosa from Limpopo Cricket and Masilo Ramothatha, fast bowler for Gauteng Strikers conducted coaching clinics where they taught learners who did not take part in the tournament basic cricket skills.
