The School Sport Summer Games 2016 was launched at the Polokwane Cricket Club by Eric Muneri, President of the Limpopo Sport Confederation on Saturday. Sport, Arts and Culture Departmental Spokesperson Kola Maila said in a media release that the School Sport Summer Games is a culmination of games that were played at school, circuit, cluster and district levels. “The talented athletes will be identified by federations through Limpopo Academy of Sport and be monitored by Limpopo Sport Confederation from where they will be recommended to sport focus schools for further nurturing and development. The Summer Games also promotes the culture of continuous participation in sport as pronounced in the Sport and Recreation Plan,” Maila said.
The purpose of the games is to consolidate Team Limpopo that will represent the province at the National School Sport Summer Games. The prioritised sporting codes include cricket, goal ball, gymnastics, basketball, kgati, rugby 7s, softball, tennis and morabaraba.
In his address, Muneri said that sport is about development and development is focused on athletes both with potential and those needing nurturing. “We can’t as leaders continue focussing on the expected support. Our desire should be in using time profitably. Educators spending time with learners doubling up as athletes should dedicate their time in assisting such athletes,” Muneri said.
According to Muneri one leader who is honest and need proper respect is time because it sticks to its commitment. “We can’t continue respecting people who makes commitments but fails to keep time. If you want people to trust and respect you, learn to respect time, Muneri explained.
“Money is just one of the resources but not all of it. We need each other, Limpopo Sport Confederation, departments and the school coordinating bodies for the success of the games. Each team or athletes who get selected should be assisted at their different municipalities through the district academies. Let all departmental programmes be integrated and be well coordinated from local levels,” Muneri advised.
