Premier Stan Mathabatha has congratulated Limpopo born Mamelodi Sundowns Captain, Hlompho Kekana and midfielder Tiyani Mabunda on their role in Sundowns’ victory in the 2016 finals of the Confederation of African Football League (CAF) in Egypt on Sunday.
The Brazilians scored a 3-1 victory over Zamalek over the two legs of the final.
Both Giyani born Mabunda and Kekana who hails from Zebediela played for Black Leopards in the early stages of their careers and were later recruited by Mamelodi Sundowns.
Praising the duo, Mathabatha said they have shown the entire South Africa that Limpopo is a home of stars. “We are proud of them and we believe their achievement will inspire the younger generation,” he said.
Capricorn District Secretary of the Motsepe Foundation, the mother body of Mamelodi Sundowns, Mabilu Mokwalakwala said they are delighted with the achievements of the club.
“They made us proud. It has been more than 20 years of domination by North African Countries in the Caf and now, in 2016 coach Pitso Mosimane and his team has restored the pride and dignity of South African soccer fraternity.”
“We want to recognise the vision of Patrice Motsepe for developing and building a formidable club that will represent the whole continent in December 2016 at the World Football Club Championships, we salute him for that,” Mokwalakwala said.
