The Limpopo girls’ u.18 rugby team were the stars of the Rural Sport Development Championships held last week in Polokwane when they defied the odds to finish second.
They achieved a 32-0 victory against Western Cape in the second place playoffs at the Polokwane Rugby fields on Friday.
Team Captain Tshepiso Lesufi, Kwena Moloto, Palesa Semono and Thotogelo Ntsoane scored and converted their tries.
Head Coach of the team, Kgothatso Laka credited the team for proving their mettle and stamping their authority on the championships. “We played against strong opponents like Mapumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape but we managed to win the matches,” Laka said.
Sport, Arts and Culture departmental Spokesperson Kola Maila congratulated athletes and teams involved. “All the teams in athletics, soccer, and netball performed well. Not all of them won gold medals but they contributed to the Limpopo team’s success. We made history by successfully hosting the Inaugural Rural Sport Development Championships,” Maila said and added that Limpopo won 17 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze medals.
Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Onicca Moloi congratulated all participants. “The past few days have seen a lot of hard work from all province’s officials and athletes. The progress achieved by federations’ scouts was tremendous. Well done to those identified in various codes as the best.”
Simon Mogashoa, Limpopo Team official said the Rural Sport Development Programme was established to address rural community participation and create the opportunity for talented athletes to be identified.
