Residents from across the province are expected to gather at Polokwane Rugby Field on Sunday when the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture hosts its seventh annual ‘Big Walk’ programme.
The main event of the day will be when citizens from all walks of life participate in the big walk over either 5, 10 or 15 km.
A press statement released by the department on Tuesday confirmed the purpose of the programme to be the promotion of social cohesion, nation building and also to encourage people to take up the habit of walking on regular basis, and to begin to engage in walking as a conscious choice in leisure-time activities.
”The programme was prompted by the ever increasing number of obesity and high incidence of heart attack amongst the communities. Walking is an effective form of physical activity for improving the cardio-vascular system that is the heart, blood vessels and lungs,” the statement read.
“We are inviting members of the community to come in numbers with their families and friends. Medical support will be present on the day and there will be water points in every 3 km.
The walk is suitable for all, rich and poor, people with disability, young and old and has no financial implications,” the statement concluded.
