Celebrating World Aids Day saw tens of enthusiastic residents participating in a 5 km fun walk in aid of Samaritan Children’s Home on Saturday.
According to the home’s fund raising manager Thuto Mashego a total of R3 200 was raised during the event. “The purpose was to create awareness about HIV/Aids while raising funds for the orphanage to begin with their sustainable agriculture programme,” Mashego explained.
The fun walk was organised in collaboration with Mzansi Athletics Club and started at 06:30 on a route that ended at the orphanage.
MEC for Health Phophi Ramathuba as well as Capricorn Executive Mayor John Mpe attended the gathering at the orphanage where they, according to Mashego, pledged their future support towards Samaritan Children’s Home. Ramathuba also donated blankets to the orphanage.
Mashego indicated that some bikers who were part of the Sapa Yopa annual bike rally in the city on the weekend also joined the gathering and made a cash donation.
Role players are planning on making the fun walk an annual event.
