Intense rivalry characterised competition during the 2019 Limpopo Closed Stroke Play Championship that took place at the Polokwane Golf Club on Saturday when Hardus Schoeman was crowned the Limpopo Champion Golfer and the Overall Gross Champion with 139 gross.
Schoeman, who came in with a 64 in the afternoon round made nine birdies and one drop shot for his eight under par score which gave him a total of five under par 139 to claim the 2019 title. Tyron Luck was announced as the Overall Nett Champion with 136 nett while Johan Geldenhuys claimed the title of Overall Mid-Am champion. Ettienne Victor outcompeted the opponents to scoop the title for Overall Senior Champion with Francois Janse van Rensburg walking away with the Overall Junior champion title.
Limpopo Golf Union Operations Manager, Jean Sadie indicated that 64 players competed during the tournament and the scene was set for a tough battle as some old familiar faces made their return to the provincial level.
The course made playing tough with some extra deep rough after the good rains the club had and the set-up was sure to challenge the players on a different level, he explained. The morning started off well with Luck taking the lead after the first nine holes on two under par 34 with Geldenhuys close behind him on one under par 35 and Neil Rathmann together with Thinus Labuschagne on level par 36, Sadie stated. He further highlighted that after 18 holes Luck was still in the lead with level par 72 after a bogey on the 17th to finish the back nine with 38. He was joined by Labuschagne and Rathmann as the clubhouse leaders after the first 18.
First in the clubhouse in the afternoon was Luck on two over par with an unfortunate double bogey six on the 18th hole. He was soon overtaken by his fellow club member Labuschagne on one over par 145. The two first golfers were then followed by Jannie Bronkhorst and Geldenhuys who fought hard for their level par 144 scores, Sadie narrated. Golfers also competed for the Limpopo Closed Foursome 2019 which was won by Bronkhorst and Rathmann with 147 gross (+3) followed by Adam Milanzi and Peter Masehela with 151 gross while Jay van der Walt and Kobus Barkhuizen finished third with 154 gross. Willem Theunissen and Erhard Spies claimed the first spot in Nett competition after completing the challenge with 144.
