Ga-Mphahlele born goalkeeper, Victoria Muroa was part of South African women’s soccer team, Banyana Banyana that represented South Africa at the 2019 Cyprus Women’s Cup held in Cyprus from 27 February to 6 March 2019.
Muroa, from First Touch Academy in Polokwane received her first call-up to join Banyana Banyana in January 2019, for the team’s friendlies against Sweden and the Netherlands.
Born and raised in Seleteng village, Ga-Mphahlele, Muroa said football was not a common sport among girls in her community.
A statement issued by team sponsor, Sasol, quoted her to have said that being a goalkeeper was also not the most popular position for her but she was determined to become the best in the province. “It was not easy playing football because sometimes family and friend always expected one to become or do something different. It was also challenging to move around from one team to the other because I was trying to see where I fitted in and where I would be able to challenge myself and grow.”
She was part of the First Touch Academy squad that made their debut at the 2018 Sasol League National Championship, in Kimberly where she received the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award.
Muroa has been in the Sasol League since its inception in 2009.
Although she had hoped to be part of the Banyana Banyana team sooner, she never gave up on her dream.
Her ten years of hard work and growth in the Sasol League finally paid off.
She says her next goal is to continue playing for the national team and make it to the 2019 Fifa Women’s World Cup.“Being part of Banyana Banyana has been such an honour and great experience for me. My first time being at the Cyprus Women’s Cup was such an eye opener, seeing how some of the best teams in the world play, train and work together. I hope to be a part of the team that will represent South Africa at the 2019 Fifa Women’s World Cup,” she concluded.
