Athletes from all districts of the province and participating in various sporting codes went all out to impress scouts during the provincial School Sport Summer Games played at different venues in the city on Saturday.
The games gave athletes an opportunity to earn a spot in one of the teams that would represent Limpopo at the national championships expected to take place from 8 to 14 December at a venue yet to be confirmed.
Participants between the ages of 13 and 17 took part in rugby, gymnastics, basketball, cricket, table tennis and softball. On Tuesday, the Chairperson for the Limpopo School Sport Coordinating Committee, Benny Boshomane emphasised that provincial teams had been selected and finalised. He indicated that the scouts had done a good job in selecting the best athletes. They will also assist in preparing the teams for the nationals with the assistance of Limpopo Academy of Sport.
He added that the committee was confident that with thorough preparation the teams would represent the province well and hopefully win the titles. On Saturday, Boshomane outlined that this was the eighth edition of the provincial games to choose the best players. He added that Limpopo finished on seventh place at the nationals last year and when he asked athletes what position they were aiming for this year, they all shouted that they wanted to emerge victorious in all the codes.
With the state of criminality currently experienced in the country, Limpopo Sport Confederation representative Tlou Langa urged athletes to always be vigilant and avoid engaging with strangers to be safe. She also encouraged team managers to look after their respective teams as she wished all the teams the best of luck.
