Fencing Academy wins big at Lim Sport Awards

Members of Limpopo Fencing Association and the Sello Maduma Fencing Academy received various accolades for their endeavours in promoting the sporting code.

Members of Limpopo Fencing Association and the Sello Maduma Fencing Academy received various accolades for their endeavours in promoting the sporting code in the province and their overall performance at various competitions during the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture’s annual awards ceremony in December.

Notable winners were Sello Maduma as coach of the year.

Maduma represented South Africa at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and London in 2012 where he competed in two épée events.

Long serving administrator, Renuka Ramroop was accorded with the award as administrator of the year.

Fencers Anokha and Rahul van Manen were named female and male athlete of the year respectively.

Maduma said his award came as a surprise given the challenges they were confronted with in 2020. “Under the difficult circumstances I cannot believe I won the award. It is encouraging. The aim is still to grow the sport in the province and to ensure that the federation is acknowledged. I am grateful and I will continue working hard.”

Ramroop said the acknowledgment by the department is a step in the right direction. “We have been working hard to get fencing on the ground. We will continue working hard and ensure that people know about the sport.”
