New team in cup finals

Limpopo will host the 2014 Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup provincial tournament at the Seshego Stadium on Saturday.

POLOKWANE – Limpopo will host the 2014 Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup provincial tournament at the Seshego Stadium on Saturday.

Five schools will compete for the Limpopo provincial title.

Matanta Secondary School from Pia village in the Waterberg district will compete in the provincial finals for the first time this year.

The school has been participating in the competition for many years, but has never progressed past the cluster level.

The coach, David Mashilo, said the players come largely from very disadvantaged families with no money for boots and kit.

One of the schools that Matanta will face in the finals is Khaiso High School.

Mashilo says this is the first time the school competes in the provincial finals, and they have come this far through hard work and pure determination.

“The team is new to the tournament, even though they don’t have experience, they still managed to win the Waterberg district. I believe they have what it takes to win the provincial title. This year we have not lost a single game despite the challenges that we encountered, such as a lack of soccer boots and kit,” says Mashilo.

He says the school had to organise a fundraiser to buy new soccer boots for the first starting line-up players.

According to Mashilo, there are four players that the school has pinned its hopes on: Glen Nkwana, Johannes Molekwa, Elliot Ramalebele and Ronny Magamatlo.

“If the school wins the R100 000 cash prize, we would use it to buy soccer balls, boots and training equipment.”

Capricorn district will be represented by Ramathupe Secondary School, Madikela High School will represent Mopani district, Sekhukhune district will be represented by Batau Secondary School, while Khaiso Secondary School will represent the Capricorn district. Vhembe district is yet to announce its team.
