Local golfers off to national cup

The regional round of the BMW Golf Cup teed off at the Polokwane Golf Club on Thursday, with three local golfers securing a spot in the national final, which is set to take place in November.

POLOKWANE – The regional round of the BMW Golf Cup teed off at the Polokwane Golf Club on Thursday, with three local golfers securing a spot in the national final, which is set to take place in November.

Polokwane’s finalists will compete against some of the best amateur golfers in South Africa for a chance to ultimately compete in the world final of the BMW Golf Cup in New South Wales, Australia next year.

Johan van der Walt, the dealer principal of BMW Modern Autohaus Polokwane, thanked all the golfers for competing in this regional round.

“This is the largest amateur golf cham-pionships in the world, with golfers from over 45 countries competing. I am also proud to announce that this is the seventh year that we have a regional round in Polokwane,” said Van der Walt.

In the women’s division, Luanie van Rooyen was announced as Polokwane’s national finalist with 29 points on a count-out.

Bev Weijters and Lynette Smith both had a better day on the course with 34 and 38 points respectively, but could not be entered into the national BMW Golf Cup final as they competed in the finals in 2012 and 2013.

Zakhele Jiyane won the men’s B-division with 38 points and will also compete in the national final.

Ebrahim Casin-Soto took second place in the B-division with 37 points, followed by Aart Juriaanse in third place.

Bryan O’Reily will join Van Rooyen and Jiyane in the national final after winning the men’s A-division with 38 points on a count-out.

Dirk Visagie and Francois Goosen took second and third place respectively in the A-division.

Anton Segwara, Mthunzi Dlamini, Desi Earle and Hein Warmenhoven each won a prize in the nearest to the pin competition.

Nelson Marais and Anton Coetzee also won a prize for the longest drives on holes five and seven respectively.
