First season games for netball teams

Netball teams in the province played their first Polokwane Netball Association league games at the Polokwane netball courts last Saturday.

POLOKWANE – Netball teams in the province played their first Polokwane Netball Association league games at the Polokwane netball courts last Saturday.

The league caters for u/12, u/15, u/19 and senior teams.

According to Cosy Rabothata, league president, the league games will be played once a month.

“The league is aiming at developing the game of netball in the province and giving young netball players an opportunity to showcase their skills. At the end of the league, we promote top three teams to the district level to compete against other districts,” she said. She added that teams that played in the district level received more exposure than those playing in the local leagues.

Players in the district level also received an opportunity to be selected to form part of the provincial team that competed against other provinces in various national meetings, she said.

Rabothata further said they wanted to see some of their players playing for the national teams in the near future. Teams that played their first games included Rising Stars, Young Fighters and Moria Supers, among others. Some of the teams could not battle it out on the courts after the games were stopped due to heavy rain.

“The only problem we have at the moment is sponsors. Companies and or government departments do not seem interested in what we do. We do not get any financial support from anyone and this denies us an opportunity to take the sport of netball to the next level,” Rabothata said. She added that they would like to see local netball players playing for national teams.
