Softball: work awaits

SESHEGO – AS the provincial softball governing structure set in motion their preparations for the upcoming u/19 national championships, the technical staff were far from being impressed with the level of talent at their disposal during a training camp held at Seshego ballpark recently.

Provincial team players are currently preparing for the junior inter-provincial tournament to be held in Mahikeng from July 2 to 4. Although the training camp over the weekend was the first session, coach Thapelo ‘TC’ Seshoka was visibly worried.

“Quite frankly, I am not impressed with the majority of these players. Most of them still have a long way before they can master the art of ball work and general fielding. A lot of them are clumsy in catching and their throwing also requires a lot of practice.

“This is not the team we can take to the tournament and expect good results. We really need to dig deep into out talent pool if we want to give a good account of ourselves at this tournament.”

Besides their ineptitude, several players, especially in the men section seemed somewhat impressive with the bat. The fact that some of them are capable of posting the ball beyond the 225m boundary line should provide some reprieve to the selection panel.

Seshoka maintained there was still room for improvement in this part of the game plan. With assistants, Nkomori Chepape and Nakedi Mohlake, they are on a mission to assemble two formidable 17-member teams in the boys and girls categories ahead of the event.

The next training camp will be staged at the same venue.

the u/19 tournament is one of the major competitions on Softball South African’ calendar alongside with the senior, u/23 and u/16 championships.
