LIMPOPO – Cargo Sports Academy, otherwise known as The Cargo Train, is in motion, calling for aspiring young sports athletes to register for the 2016 season.
The academy’s principal and head coach, Cargo Mamabolo, made this announcement on Sunday after their netball and football teams participated in the ongoing Polokwane Municipality’s Mayoral Cup in Mankweng.
Registration window period is now open until early next year
The academy calls on young athletes between the ages of 10 and 20 years and players are expected to pay a registration fee of R800 and a further R1 200 per month.
The costs will cover tuition at Ntjie Mathapo Primary School and Gerson Ntjie Secondary School in the rural village of Ga-Mothapo in the Mankweng area.
Apart from school fees, Mamabolo said, the other expense will be for accommodation, catering, transport from the academy at Turfloop to school at Ga-Mothapo and sports equipment.
Academy appeals to potential backers for financial assistance
Mamabolo said his academy is struggling financially at the moment and he appealed to potential backers to assist him in his sports development programmes.
“We call on good Samaritans to come forward and assist these youngsters so that we can take them from the streets and steer them onto the right sporting paths. In the past, we have engaged government and public institutions to help us financially but we received many empty promises,” Mamabolo said.

The academy is based at Turfloop’s Unit D, where administration and playing facilities are based.
At the moment, the sports development institution offers training for youngsters only in football and netball.
However, over the weekend, Mamabolo announced that plans are afoot to introduce athletics, softball and volleyball.
The abovementioned sporting codes will register with respective associations in the province.
At the moment netball is an affiliate member of Polokwane Netball Association while the football team campaigns in the Polokwane Local Football Association league.
If the plan materialises, the softball side will campaign in the Limpopo Softball Association, volleyball with Limpopo Volleyball Association and athletics will affiliate with Limpopo Athletics.
“By ensuring that we register our sporting codes with respective federations, we want to ensure that we adhere to international standards of playing rule and sheer professionalism,” Mamabolo said.
