LIMPOPO – With school examinations currently in full swing sporting fields across the spectrum cut lonely places in the province.
The absence of mass participation in basketball, and on netball and volleyball courts, baseball and softball diamonds and soccer pitches is evident as the athletes have more pressing issues to attend to.
Several sport federations in the province have confirmed their domestic league and competitions have been put on hold to allow school going players to concentrate on final year examinations.
Although statistics are not available to validate the number of learners affiliated to provincial sport associations in Limpopo it is a well-known fact the bulk of active players at club levels are the learners who are currently writing their final school examinations.
Limpopo Volleyball Association’s tournaments director and provincial head coach, Masipa Mass Mailula, validated this. “We are not going to have any activity on our courts during the examination period. We want to allow our players to concentrate on their studies.”
Madia Khoza, who has just been appointed developmental coach at the Limpopo Basketball Association, also confirmed their leagues have been put on hold until the end of November.
“However, when the boys are done with their tuition commitments, we are going to stage a year-end tournament. At this moment, we just want to allow learners to peruse their studies as we understand education is a fundamental prerogative for future endeavor.” explained Khoza.
Limpopo Softball Association’s general secretary, Mokagadi Moswatsi, is one in spirit with this viewpoint and stated: “Softball for many years has been champion of the campaign for education in order to boasts school-educated athletic products.”
The Mayoral Cup under the banner of the Polokwane Netball Association has also been halted.
