POLOKWANE – Last year marked the final time the Vodacom Cup took place as the South African Rugby Union (Saru) decided to restructure domestic competitions from 2016.
The end of the Vodacom Cup is bad news for the Assupol Limpopo Blue Bulls as they worked very hard to compete in the competition. The team struggled in the Vodacom Cup in the first two years but in 2015 they performed a lot better in all of their competitions. “Last year we really did well and felt we would only become better with time; it is truly unfortunate to see the end of the Vodacom Cup,” Charles van Wyk, vice president of Assupol Limpopo Blue Bulls, said.
The two remaining competitions will be the Absa Currie Cup and the Super Rugby, but the Assupol Limpopo Blue Bulls cannot compete as they did not qualify, despite their great performance in 2015.
The u/20 Limpopo Blue Bulls will still remain to compete and the Limpopo Blue Bulls women’s team will also continue to compete in the Interprovincial League but the u/19, u/21 and senior team will unfortunately not continue.
Van Wyk also had something to say of the highly anticipated warm-up match between the Vodacom Blue Bulls and the Golden Lions. “We are expecting a hard clash between the two teams, we know the Blue Bulls are a very capable team and they will be taking on the Absa Currie Cup winners, so we can’t wait to see what the match has in store for us.”
He also invites the whole community to come and watch the match and support the titanic rugby teams. The match will take place at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on 13 February.
