Local cricketer is a hit
Former Hoërskool Pietersburg learner and cricketer Landre Coetsee, was part of the University of Pretoria (Tuks) team that won the Varsity Cricket Cup final against the University of Western Cape (UWC) recently
POLOKWANE – Tuks defeated UWC by 21 runs in the final of the 2016 Varsity Cricket Cup on Saturday evening at Senwes Park. Tuks ended on 174/5 and UWC were restricted to 153/6.
Coetsee participated in his first Varsity Cricket Cup matches this year. He said the games were intense and he was happy to be part of the team that won the trophy.
He started playing cricket when he was nine years old and this helped him to master a lot of cricket tricks and tactics.
“I am happy I finally had the chance to play in the Varsity Cricket Cup. What I like most about this tournament is that it is watched by many people, so you never know who might be interested in you and offer you a contract,” Coetsee explained.
He added that the semi-final game against the North West University (Potchefstroom) prepared them for the finals.
He further said they did not know what to expect in the finals as UWC beat University of Johannesburg in the semi-finals.
He emphasised that cricket was a team sport, which is why one should be a team player in order to succeed.
Coetsee said he greatly admired AB de Villiers because he has achieved a lot in the cricket fraternity and he excels in what he does.
“I look forward to the Red Bull Campus Cricket Championships that will be held in Sri Lanka. I will continue working hard during the training sessions to improve on my bowling pace and keep my fitness level up to standard.”
He advised young people to chase their dreams and have confidence in their abilities.
He said hard work, dedication and passion paid and they should keep on pushing until their dreams become reality.
