Badminton: Olga takes a swing and scores

Review had the opportunity to learn more about this talented sport star and her love for badminton.

MOKOPANE – Local badminton player, Olga Joubert, fell in love with the sport in 2008 and it has been one of her biggest passions ever since.

Olga is also a senior admin clerk at the Polokwane police legal department. “I played badminton for the police team as it was mandatory at the time and after I picked up the racquet for the first time I was hooked on the sport.” She later competed in the Police Badminton Championship where she claimed a silver medal in the women’s doubles category with her teammate, Leoné Potgieter. She was also chosen to play for the Woodroffe team which is currently the second best badminton team in South Africa and will go on to compete in the National Championships in October.

She also plays for the Limpopo team which consists of Daniel Joubert, Johannes Malena, Ntugamili Moipolai, Zaraga Varghese, and Divya George. “I love badminton because it is a great stress reliever for me and you get to travel the country as you compete in competitions.”

She said the sport is great because it elevates your fitness levels due to it being such a fast-paced sport which involves a lot of running.

Olga trains three times a week, twice of which is at the Capricorn Badminton Club, to keep her skills sharp for the police badminton team.

“When I first started playing badminton it was under the tutelage of coach André Potgieter. These days my husband, Daniel, oversees my training as he is an exceptional badminton player himself.”

She invites anyone who might be interested in learning more about badminton or anyone who wants to take part in the sport to visit the Capricorn Badminton Club from Mondays to Fridays between 17:30 and 21:00. For any enquiries, contact André Potgieter at 082 685 3066 or contact Olga at 084 560 1201.

“The sport is a fun way to stay fit and we encourage everyone to give it a shot, especially the youth.”
