Running campaign ‘reflects’ on safety first

Eskom Athletics Club Limpopo has embarked on a mission to promote safety awareness among athletes, specifically marathon runners.

POLOKWANE – According to Eskom Athletics Club Treasurer, Solly Mokgohloa, they need input from businesses and individuals to help implement their safety campaign.

He explained with the approaching winter months it gets darker earlier in the evenings which makes it dangerous for those who run after work. This is why they encourage athletes to wear reflector vests to make them more visible to other road users.

Solly asked if there would be any business or individual willing to sponsor reflector vests for runners to help keep them safe.

“Runners from various clubs around Polokwane often exercise on busy streets across the city and the visibility and safety of these runners is of paramount importance,” he explained.

This is why, he added, the Eskom Athletics Club took the initiative to start a safety campaign through which they want to give athletes in the city, whether they belong to a club or are just running individually, reflector vests.

“If companies decide to sponsor us they are welcome to brand the vests to their desire,” he added.

Solly is self an experienced marathon runner with 12 Comrades Marathons under his belt. He further completed 11 Two Oceans Marathons, 14 Sowetan Marathons, 11 Rand Athletic Club (RAC) 32 km races and six Kosmos Three-in-One Marathons in Secunda.

Along with visibility being important for runners, there are other safety measures and rules the athletes must adhere to such as instead running with the flow of traffic, they must run against the flow so they can see approaching vehicles.

Anyone willing to sponsor the Eskom Athletics Club’s safety campaign can contact the committee members at Solly Mokgohloa (Treasurer) 082 448 5003, Bunch Thoka (Chairperson) 082 684 4312, or Master Kgomo (Secretary) 082 803 2171.
