PRR athletes ace Comrades run
The athletes from Pietersburg Road Runners (PRR) did the city proud this year and brought back some of the most sought-after prizes.
POLOKWANE – Every year thousands of brave and hopeful runners stand at the start line of the annual Comrades Marathon. When the starter pistol went off this year, 26 runners from Pietersburg Road Runners (PRR) joined the throng in an attempt to make the finish line in time. Among the prizes, PRR took the team prize for the first team to finish. Two of the runners, Timothy Munzhelele, and Letendo Maphoto, also received the Wally Hayward medal. This medal, a silver-centred circled by gold ring, is given to runners finishing after the top 10 runners, but still finish in under six hours.
The club boasted with six novice runners all of whom completed the marathon. Lucky Maahlo was the biggest surprise when he finished the race in 06:50. Three runners from the club received silver medals, namely Calvin Malatji, Johan van der Merwe and Lucky Maahlo. Johan van der Merwe received his 10th silver medal.
Club Chairperson, Colinda Potgieter, said the team did exceptionally well and she was proud of every single achievement.
Novice runner, Amri van Aarde said the day was long and hot but worth every single pain and cramp, as well as all the sweat and tears.
Seventeen-time Comrades runner, Johan van der Merwe, said that he is already looking forward to his next Comrades for a personal best time.
