Mogau Tshehla to be remembered at memorial service

Mogau Tshehla (26), one of the players who kept Polokwane City FC fans on the edge of their seats, sadly passed away in a car accident.

POLOKWANE – The MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Onicca Moloi, in a press release said: “As a football player who played for a Limpopo based professional team, he was an inspiration to the youngsters in our province and the rest of the country, particularly those who aspire to be sport stars. We have conveyed our sympathy to both Polokwane City and his family”.

Polokwane City FC Spokesperson, Vusi Ntimane, confirmed Tshehla’s death on Tuesday, 13 February.

According to Ntimane, the 26-year-old died in a car accident in Kwaggafontein, Mpumalanga on the evening of Sunday, 11 February, on his way to spend time with his family during his off weekend.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends. He will be remembered as a player who loved life and the sport he played with all his heart. It made so many fans proud to see him in action,” one of his teammates told Review.

Tshehla joined Polokwane FC from his hometown club, Witbank Spurs, in January 2017 and played for 90 minutes in City’s last three matches.

Ntimane further added the soccer player met his death at a time in which he was well establishing himself as a regular among those chosen for Bernard Molekwa’s starting XI.

One of Ubuntu Cape Town’s players sent out a heartfelt Tweet following the news of Tshehla’s death.

“Wow.. No words describe how we feel about this news.

Incredibly surreal. Just last week he was on the pitch with us. We may banter a lot on Twitter, but on and off the field we’re one football family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family. Be strong (sic).”

Retired South African soccer player, Mark Fish, also gave his condolences to the bereaved family. “My heart goes out to his family. I know he will be missed and that he was not just a soccer player but a father or brother or husband. His family will be in my prayers.

“The soccer world lost an upcoming star and I pray God will carry his family through this time,” Fish told Review.

His memorial service will be today (Thursday) at 16:00 at the Witbank Civic Theatre and his funeral will be on Friday, 16 February at 07:00 at the IPC Kromdraai in Witbank.
