Moorcroft keeps the ball on the roll at Northern Academy
The head of sport at Northern Academy Secondary School, Oliver Moorcroft, has big plans for sport at the school.
POLOKWANE – Moorcroft’s biggest goal is to ensure that the school’s major sporting codes (hockey, netball, cricket, athletics, soccer and rugby) compete with the top 10 schools in the country.
The 29-year-old avid rugby player, who pursues a bachelor degree in education at the North-West University, said the goal is part of the school’s five-year objective.
Moorcroft joined the sport department in January from Mitchell House and remarked that they have capable and talented athletes at the school who will help them to achieve his goal.
“We have 2 312 learners who are eager to play all the sporting codes and excel in it. We have good players in all our sporting codes and need to get them to play at the top level.”
“We want to see our cricket team play in the schools’ super league and rugby team compete against other top schools in the country. Our soccer is doing well and we are part of the top 10 schools in the country.
“We have players who play for the development clubs in the Premier Soccer League and that is pleasing and encouraging to see.”
He added that they have a five-year plan to ensure that all players from the school play at top rugby franchises in the country.
“To achieve that we have started with our u/15 rugby team which is our flagship project. We want to develop these players so that they can reach their full potential. We also want to help them get scholarships at various universities.”
Moorcroft cannot wait to join his Noordelikes Rugby Club rugby mates at their first pre-season rugby practice session on November 1.
“Rugby is my life and it is a perfect sport to destress. It will be good to play again with my teammates, as it has been a while since we played together. I missed playing and I can’t wait to get on the field.”
