Young golfers’ development on par

Golf instructor Mike Baylis is happy with the strides made by aspiring young golfers from Polokwane and Ga-Moeti Golf Club since they joined the club's golf development programme in June.

POLOKWANE – Mike spoke at an event held at the Polokwane Golf Club on October 10.

The event saw junior golfers test and sharpen their drives, bunker shots and putting skills.

“We started with the programme months ago and there is huge progress. The young golfers play against each other twice a month and the most exciting element is that they understand the rules of the sport. There is great promise and that is pleasing,” Mike said.

Ketso Sebokedi from Ga-Moeti Golf Club said some of their golfers have lower handicaps and they are ready to compete.

“We started with the programme in June and most of the people thought it was a pipe dream. We are happy to announce that we have developed real golfers. They have made huge progress and they are just waiting for the opportunity to compete at major golf events. We want to thank Mike, Limpopo Academy of Sport and Polokwane Golf Club for opening doors for the young golfers. When they started they did not know anything about golf but now they speak the golf lingo.”

He added that one of their club’s core objectives is to produce a top golfer from the club. “We have 80 children in the club and next year we want to have 200. We want children from rural areas to play golf because through golf they are able to build a strong network, form strong relations and I want to build captains of industries. It is possible, we just need sponsors. We need bags and clubs for players. We currently use the clubs that are provided by Mike. Our wish is to see every child have their own bag and clubs so that they are able to play in competitions outside of the province,” Sebokedi said.
