Muni to raise R1.5m for students through golf day
The Polokwane Municipality plans to raise R1.5m with their Mayoral Charity Golf Day set to take place at the Polokwane Golf Club on December 10.

POLOKWANE – The money will assist over 200 indigent students in the Polokwane area to gain access to tertiary education. John Mpe, Mayor of Polokwane Municipality, made the announcement at the launch of the event at the Polokwane Golf Club on December 2.
The annual event will see local golfers, business people and politicians come together at the club to support the noble initiative.
Mpe said they remain resolute and without doubt that the business community and individuals will support the charitable cause.
“We believe through partnership this target is achievable. It will be a plus for the young people in this municipality if we go beyond the set target.
“It is our goal that more students are given an opportunity to attain higher education during the 2022 year of study. This will give hope where hope is lost.’’
He added the event will bring business people from Polokwane together to network whilst they play golf in a relaxed environment.
“The turf becomes a drawing board for new innovative business ideas to ensure that we rise above the challenges we face. We are hopeful that the business community takes a far more optimistic view and that together we will rise above our current uncertainties, to become a vibrant and prosperous community. We therefore invite the business sector and individuals to come on board and assist us to make this a reality.’’
Mpe described the charity event as one of the success stories of the municipality over the past years.
“This is not a new concept to the people of Polokwane. The municipality, through the executive mayor, hosted this important event since 2011 to change the lives of vulnerable or less privileged children within our communities.
“We want them to gain access to tertiary education through the Mayoral Bursary Fund. Even though we meet under the unusual circumstances of Covid-19, we still believe that we cannot give up on the education of our children,” he said.
“We decided to go ahead and appeal to the business community to continue to contribute to our society and to the education of the South African child.
“It is through their kind contributions that African children will continue to have a meaningful place in the development and economy of our country,’’ concluded Mpe.
