Ivy Park u/13 hockey team reigns supreme

Ivy Park Primary is a school that not only excels in academics, but in their sporting activities as well.

POLOKWANE – The school’s u/13 hockey team not only won the Regional Championships but also won the Limpopo Championships.

After the team qualified at regionals, they moved on to the provincial championships which took place in Tzaneen. The players competed with teams from near and far and managed to be beat every single one in their category.

According to one of the team’s coaches, Nadia Grobler, the players have been hard at work perfecting their skills and that is why they emerged victorious. “We achieved a great deal for such a small school, especially having to compete against bigger schools. We practiced long and hard and put in a great deal of time and effort. We are proud of what we have achieved,” Grobler said.

According to team manager, Douw Grobler, the road leading to the championships was not easy.

“We don’t have the numbers that some of the bigger schools have. Other schools start training their players from an early age but we have a different team each year. So we have to start with a new team, teaching them the basics each year,” he said.

Coach Minette Espach had this to say: “The children really put in the time and effort. If they had not worked so hard, we wouldn’t have won two grand titles”. Matome Munyai, the team captain said: “It’s a dream come true for us and it is the best thing to happen to the school in a very long time.”
