Show excercise at Makhado
The South African Air Force (SAAF) had an air capability demonstration at the Roodewaal Bomb Range
The South African Air Force (SAAF) had an air capability demonstration at the Roodewaal Bomb Range last Wednesday and Thursday.
Genl Maj Gerald Malinga pointed out the necessity of such demonstrations in evaluating the South African Air Force’s capabilities.
The day started with special guests arriving at Air Force Base (AFB) Waterkloof at 06:30, ready to fly out to Polokwane International Airport in two DC9’s, especially chartered for the day.
An Oryx started the action with a water-drop using the Bambi bucket. This was to show guests how these aircraft could quickly put out a fire in an emergency.
As the activities continued, mortar teams were deployed and the Special Forces Gecko was deployed with cargo slung under an Oryx, followed closely by two teams of soldiers to engage the enemy. Two Rooivalk attack helicopters also joined in the fun by firing missiles at the “enemy” using their 20mm cannons.
A flare demonstration by the Rooivalk and then the Hercules C130, which is celebrating its 50th year of service with the SAAF, ended the show.
After the show, lunch was served and guests left with a new-found knowledge of the air force’s capabilities.
