Sing Off SA to hit Polokwane

POLOKWANE – SABC 1’s new reality TV show The Sing-Off SA was hunting talent in Polokwane last week.
The show, which is the first a capella singing talent show in South Africa, allows choirs of three to seven people to be versatile by giving them an opportunity to audition in categories including beat boxing, house and kwaito.
Series director, Phybia Dlamini, said Limpopo was the show’s second round of auditions after Johannesburg. “We are still going to Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban and out of all those auditions, we will only choose 10 finalist groups, to compete for the final 10 episodes to be aired on SABC 1,” Dlamini said.
Talent scout and vocal coach Vuyo Tshuma guided groups in perfecting their harmony and finding their identity. He said the Limpopo auditions had revealed exceptional potential and diverse musical content and culture. “With more practise and dedication, they can improve their harmony and vocal intonation to colourise and beef up their identity,” Tshuma said.
Isidingo actress, singer and presenter, Noluthando Meje, travels with the show as its host, providing links, conducting interviews with groups of hopefuls, attending the auditions and doing general field reporting.
Meje said in an official statement that she was excited to be part of a show that would discover new talent. She told Express that she was grateful for the support they had received in Limpopo.
The Tuesday auditions saw the birth of a new group called Fusion.
The members who incorporated rap and soul met on the scene, freestyled and impressed the crew.
“We just met here now. We do not even know each other. Although the judges said we still had to work on our harmony, I believe God brought us together, because our freestyle impressed them. Our meeting cannot be a coincidence,” Eward Maebela, said.
The winning group will walk away with a R250 000 cash prize and a Sony recording contract.
Ten episodes of the show will air on SABC 1, starting on May 3.
