Waterberg’s focus on academics

The focus is on academics and there are extra classes in various subjects, as well as winter school to encourage the learners to do their best

MOKOPANE  – This was according to André Horn, Acting Principal of Waterberg High School.

This is the sixth year Waterberg High School excels academically and at the Mogalakwena Circuit academic prize-giving recently, the school was richly rewarded.

Horn said he and his personnel are geared to ensure that the Gr 12 learners pass with good marks. Not only was Waterberg High School named the best large school in the district, but the school also received a trophy for the big school with the most bachelors matric passes in the district: 79 out of 109 Gr 12s obtained bachelors matric passes, scoring an average of 72,4% or higher.

The school also received a trophy for being an ambassador school and nine of the teachers received certificates as learners performed best in the Gr 12 subjects they teach.

Two of last year’s matriculants were among the top five learners who received trophies for the best marks obtained in certain subjects.

Horn, who has been the acting principal since 2011, said the school had a 100% pass rate for five years but last year managed a 99, 1% pass rate.

“This year the school is already working to achieve a 100% pass rate again.

Currently 746 learners are enrolled and there is a long waiting list. “Unfortunately, we can’t help everyone.

“The four Gr 8 classrooms, which are quite small, are packed with more than 40 learners each.

“We’re just thankful the school is doing financially well. The school fees are only R4 000 per year and affordable.”

In addition to academics there are athletics, football, rugby, netball and even swimming classes.

The learners can also do chess or join the choir or try out cheerleading or drum majorettes.
