Tuck into mouthwatering African cuisine at Zwashu

Zwashu Restaurant and Catering in Polokwane is your gateway to African cuisine food

POLOKWANE – Zwashu is a Tshivenda name which means “ours” and is situated in the CBD in Landdros Maré Street.

Zwashu co-owner and manager, Ayanda Mudau, says the menu ranges from oxtail, pork trotters (magwanda), mogodu (magulu), lamb head (skop), lamb shank, hardbody (mukokoroshi), chicken and beef stew, just to name but a few.

She says all meals are served with side salads and starch ranging from rice, pap and dumplings, depending on a customer’s choice.

“The dumpling is a favourite among the customers. It has a muffin shape and the taste is absolutely exceptional, plus it goes well with any kind of meat,” Mudau explains.

Mudau says the shop operates seven days a week from 11:30 to 18:00, including public holidays. She says they serve around 100 customers per day.

“Growing up, my parents used to host guests over weekends and they always cooked, so all the kids would assist in the preparation of food because it is a family tradition.”

She says getting into the restaurant and catering business was easy because making food is what the family knows best.

Although they started out as a catering company, they felt it was time to have their very own restaurant where food lovers could have access to delicious African food regularly, and not wait for a wedding or a funeral where Zwashu was catering.

The restaurant opened its doors last year and has grown exponentially, often attracting hungry clients from outside Limpopo.

“Most people who visit the province make a stop at Zwashu to have lunch, including celebrities,” Mudau explains.

She says some of the highlights at the restaurant included the Sapa Yopa 2015 rally and departmental events.
