The Command Team of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Limpopo has applauded the Police for stopping a cash-in-transit robbery suspect, perceived to be terrorising the community in the Ga-Masemola area for an extensive period, in his tracks on Tuesday.
According to Provincial Police Corporate Communications Head Motlafela Mojapelo the deceased, identified as 52-year-old David Mokete, had been suspected of being part of a bigger group of nine alleged robbers of whom eight were arrested by the Task Team On The Prevention Of Trio Crimes and the Police in Lebowakgomo after an incident in the area on Tuesday afternoon. During the cash-in-transit heist an undisclosed amount was reportedly taken and recovered with four vehicles and three firearms. According to Mojapelo the suspect had escaped in a getaway BMW, but was fatally wounded and three more suspects injured in a shoot-out at Apel Cross before being apprehended.
Mojapelo further stated that the deceased had also been suspected of another similar incident executed on the Matlala road approximately three months back, but also got away while his fellow-suspects were arrested at a filling station in Polokwane.
The remaining eight suspects had appeared in court in Lebowakgomo today on charges of armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as possession of stolen motor vehicles, Provincial Police spokesperson Mamphaswa Seabi said in an updated statement. They are Khutso Masemola (42), Mbengeni Dingo (27), Prince Ndinisa (27), Nicolas Mabaso (34), Lekoko Kgatuke (36), Jeffrey Maphaki (52), Oscar Molokoane (34) and Osiel Dladla (48). They remain in custody until 8 August.
In a media statement just released the EFF Provincial Command Team commended the Police for their sterling work by rooting out an alleged hard core criminal from the community. “The Police deserve credit as this sends a clear message that criminality should never be tolerated. The community of Masemola, surrounding villages and the province at large have finally found peace and harmony as the criminal is no longer in their sight. Our people can now carry on with their lives because the one who has being holding them at ransom with criminal activities has been flushed out. The work of the Police is to protect communities and fight criminality. We are glad that in this instance they have done just that. We wish that this effectiveness can continue from politicians to the last criminal.” The EFF in Limpopo concluded stating that it trusted that more communities around the province would get protection against criminal elements and that the Police would focus more on their mandate as they demonstrated in this case.
