Police are investigating the murder of a 35-year-old man whose body was found following protest action by a crowd of disgruntled persons who barricaded Nelson Mandela Drive adjacent to Disteneng yesterday (Wednesday).
The purported reason for their discontent was apparently Polokwane Municipality’s reported intention to evict them from the land.
Provincial Police Corporate Communications Head, Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed that the land was reportedly illegally occupied and the municipality was to effect the eviction process. Residents then barricaded Nelson Mandela Drive with burning tyres and other debris.
Members of the Public Order Policing Unit (Pops) were summoned to the area and rubber bullets were fired to disperse the crowd who has also pelted vehicles with stones, Mojapelo said.
He added that the corpse of a man was found by the dispersing crowd. The body was covered in blood and apparently murdered. There is currently no information that links the death with the protest, Mojapelo indicated.
The man hails from Bolobedu and his name will be released once his next-of-kin were notified.
Investigations continue.
