After 13 years of entertaining people at various celebrations, members of the Ralema based Matsaka Brass Band were recently recognised for their determination and hard work during the band’s anniversary jubilation at Ralema Primary School, Moletjie.
The band, known far and wide in the province as well as Mpumalanga, was invited to the Union Buildings by former President Jacob Zuma on 27 April 2014 to entertain the audience at the National Freedom Day celebrations.
Band owner Matsaka Mohlaloga indicated that the 13th anniversary ceremony was to award players for a job well done and again recognise community humanitarians. Mohlaloga views the band as a mechanism to unearth talent and keep youth occupied for them to stay away from criminal activities. He stated that the band also serves as exercise and helps learners to refresh their minds after a hectic day at school.
The band has produced Coco Mabotja, the regional marketing manager of a financial institution in Mamelodi and has helped Phuti Lekokotla to obtain five distinctions, a level 6 and 5 in the previous academic year, Mohlaloga informed. At the ceremony Lekokotla was presented with a laptop by Kgoshi Kgabo Moloto III for his achievements and for being a top learner at J.H Moloto Secondary School.
“We have been together for years and I saw it fit to reward the players. I think this would also boost their morale. Our band is well-known for its good performances. Then Minister of Arts and Culture, Paul Mashatile once visited us to hand over instruments. I am proud of the boys and I would like to thank and applaud them for a job well done,” Mohlaloga said.
The celebration attracted parents, radio presenters and television actors, Police officials and magistrates, among others.
