New Creta shows more dynamism and dare

I have just driven the new Hyundai Creta - the 1.4-litre turbo and I love it!

It is fresh-faced and edgy in design – leaner on the eye (than the previous model of which Hyundai sold some 14 811 units) and will certainly, I think, encourage buyers to give it the beady eye. Like with most car designs these days – considering all the JVs and the rest that manufacturers get into, you will find subtle similarities in the Creta with the Tucson and others, but you know what, I am perfectly comfortable with the collective result – which is the Creta. If the shoe fits The new Creta is slightly longer and wider than its predecessor and the creased hood lines and larger grille, certainly makes a bold statement of elegance and power. From the side, the design line synchronises well with the wheel arches. The two-tone (black roof and C-pillar) paint job adds to the mood of the car which is stylish and elegant. I must add though, my test vehicle was white and black – it is okay, but I prefer the stronger colours on offer. The Creta’s edgy design demands the attention which bright colours brings to it. At the rear, the sharp line along the boot lid just beneath the black insert, really defines the design and deliver focus which balance with the broad and black bumper. All of this sits atop 17-inch rubber which rewards one with good ground clearance and SUV comfort. It’s all on the inside Hyundai has kept it simple, clean, spacious and comfy. The drivers seat offers height adjustment to synchronise with the D-shaped and telescopic steering. The latter also offer controls to access the infotainment system and cruise control. A button on the steering will also allow you access, via voice recognition, to your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone. And here I have to observe – why do drivers not enable and use Bluetooth in their cars? It is still not safe to do so but at least, it keeps both hands on the steering. You can control various luxury systems via voice commands and the 8-inch touch screen on the centre console. So on the open road – cruise control and voice commands, is just such a blast. And so is the park assist with rear camera and the rest when space is not so open (parking garages). The office – well, the Creta redefines the mobile office and mobility environment. Three derivatives – excellent power all round Yes, the Creta is available in three derivatives – naturally aspirated 1.5, 1.5 Turbo diesel and a 1.4 turbocharged petrol unit. These engines are mated to either a six-speed manual or conventional autobox, and automatic (IVT) box or super smooth 7-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT). The choice is really yours. My test vehicle was the top of the range 1.4 Turbo developing 103kW and 242Nm. It is exceptionally responsive and provides ample power to make every drive – long or short – pure pleasure. The Creta’s suspension is firm, agile and provides and all-round comfortable drive. Final word It is light and energetic and registered a good 7.4lt/100km over my weekend drive. Get one – the family will love you to bits! Pricing starts at R374 900 and includes a 7-year 200 000km warranty.
