TRICHARDT – Mr Carl Westergreen is challenging readers who have long, healthy hair to cut and donate it to Cansa.
He cuts his long locks once a year and has decided this year to donate it to Cansa in order for them to make wigs for cancer patients.
“I am doing this to help those in need and I am challenging all men and women of all ages, to make a difference in a cancer patients’ lives.”
When Mr Westergreen’s pony was cut, the Ridge Times asked him how he felt and he said, “Lighter”.
Ms Charné Oliver, owner of Scissorhands Salon, cut Mr Westergreen’s pony tail.
“I support Cansa because this is a matter close to home and I am challenging all other salons out there to get your clients to cut their pony tails for a good cause,” Ms Oliver said.
The requirements for human hair donations are that the hair must be 22cm or longer.
Your hair should be clean and dry and may have been dyed.
The hair must be bounded at both ends with an elastic band and placed in a zip-lock bag.
This helps preserves the hair while it being transported to the wig manufacturer.
Send your hair donation in a plastic bag with your name and contact details on it.
Ms Jacqueline Erasmus, community mobiliser for Cansa Cosmos, said: “Your donation can help make someone feel beautiful again.”
Cancer patients who undergo treatment typically need wigs for short periods of time and usually buy acrylic wigs which are less expensive than wigs made from human hair.
Cansa, in partnership with Marie Claire and the Kindest Cut Campaign, wants to receive enough ponytails to make 250 wigs.
These will be distributed to Cansa Care Centres countrywide and will be given to cancer survivors.
You can join the Cansa Shavathon that will be held on 1 and 2 March.
You can spray, shave or make a donation of R50 for adults or R25 for children under the age of 12.
The Shavethon will take place at the Secunda Mall from 9am to 5pm and at the Five Star SuperSpar on 1 March from 9am to 5pm.
