SECUNDA – Solomon Gamede, Gift Langa and Nhlanhla Masilela, pupils from Chief Ampie Mayisa Secondary School, came first at the 2014 South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) Sasol Environmental Sustainability Project regional presentations held at the Sasol Club on Tuesday, 16 September.

They were competing with pupils from Kiriyatwane Secodary School, namely Thoko Malinga, Sphesihle Mavuso and Nicolas Xavier, and pupils from Sizwakele High School, namely Louise Mashele, Girly Simelane and Zanele Mathebula.

The SAIIA Sasol Environmental Sustainability Project is a schools outreach competition that requires teams of pupils to research an assigned topic related to environmental sustainability and to consider what possible recommendations or solutions they would propose at a local, national, regional or global level.

This programme is open to all interested pupils from Grade 10 to 12 and can be used by Grade 11 Life Science teachers for human impact on the environment projects.

The Environmental Sustainability Project (ESP) is divided into three parts: research paper where three pupils form a team and write a research paper of up to 12 pages on selected topics related to environmental sustainability.

The second part is presentation.

Teams with the best research papers are invited to present their research findings at a provincial or regional event organised by SAIIA.

Lastly, is youth negotiations at the SAIIA Young Leaders Conference.

Top pupils who have excelled in the ESP go to Gauteng for the SAIIA Young Leaders Conference each December where they participate in their own negotiation sessions to propose possible recommendations for global environmental sustainable issues to government and the United Nations.

The winning pupils of Chief Ampie Mayise will take part in this year’s conference.
