eMzinoni march: EFF says it is not intimidated
The Economic Freedom Fighters handed over a memorandum to the mayoral committee.
eMZINONI – The security was tight during the Economic Freedom Fighters march on Thursday, 16 April.
Local police and the Secunda Public Order Policing escorted protesters who blocked roads and burnt tyres in the early hours of the day.
The mayoral committee was accompanied by a group of Umkhoto weSizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA).
Mr Alfred Sikhosana, EFF provincial secretary, slammed MKMVA for allowing the municipality to use them as their body guards instead of joining the community in the struggles.
“It is amazing that they are intimidating us with the hungry and weak MKMVA.
“Some of these former soldiers are sick and instead of helping them, the municipality uses them for their protection.
“Well we are not intimidated.”
He said the EFF is determined to eradicate all the unjust treatments and poor service delivery issues in the area.
“We are guided by the seven non-negotiable cardinal pillars of the EFF which are free quality education, free health care, housing and sanitation, corrupt-free government and a society without fear of victimisation by the state.”
The memorandum stated that the office of the mayor must render services such as water and sanitation and electricity for the residents of Extension 11.
They further stated that the mayor must withdraw her threats of evicting the residents.
“She must go to the community that she disrespected and apologise.
“If she thinks we are threatened, she must be joking because we are not going anywhere.”
Mr Mandla Khayiyane, MMC for finance, received the memorandum on behalf of the executive mayor, Ms Lindi Masina.
He said the mayor was held up in a meeting with the premiers and told the marchers that the municipality will respond in the next seven working days.
