The dangers of ‘imbawula’
The community is requested to take precaution when using imbawula.
As the winter season approaches, the community is warned to watch out for the dangers of “imbawula”(makeshift coal stove).
Imbawula is made from a large tin can with holes on the sides and designed to burn for a long time.
It releases toxic fumes (carbon monoxide) when burning and families must avoid putting it inside their houses because it can lead to fatalities.
Most shack dwellers use it to keep warm and to cook.
According to Sgt George Dhlamini, communications officer of the Sakhile Police, they campaign annually just before winter about the dangers.
