Municipality fail to provide pre-paid meters
Developer waits three months for pre-paid electricity meters and 200 people are on waiting list.
SECUNDA – A municipal employee apparently told a developer recently to “just connect the electricity illegally”.
The developer finished with a block of apartments and battled to get pre-paid electricity meters installed.
He went to the municipality to query about what he should do.
“I could not believe it when he told me to just connect my own electricity illegally,” said the developer.
“I want to do the right thing, but they tell me to either steal electricity, or my block of apartments must stand empty and be without electricity.”
According to the developer, this employee also told him that the municipality does not have money a buy pre-paid meters, but they also do not want to allow the public to buy these meters somewhere else.
There are apparently 200 people on the waiting list for pre-paid electricity meters.
“If the municipality cannot afford it, why don’t they allow us to buy it from someone else?” asked the developer.
He has been battling for three months to get pre-paid meters from the municipality.
The newspaper asked the head of Marketing and Communications of the Govan Mbeki Municipality, Mr Henry Masango, for comment, but he did not respond at the time of going to the press.
