Municipal employees demand answers
Municipal employees will embark on a protected strike if the speaker of the council does not attend to their grievances.
Lekwa Municipality employees, who are members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU), recently submitted a memorandum with a list of their grievances to the office of the Speaker.
According to the letter, Mr Linda Dhlamini, must address their concerns urgently.
They said they will embark on a protected strike, if he failed to address the issues.
They demanded a response within seven working days after the day of acceptance of the memorandum.
The demands were:
• Safe vehicles.
• Safe transportation.
• Firearms and protective clothing such as bulletproof vests for traffic officers.
• The municipality must attend to the grading issue of employees.
• The municipality should be responsible for all the traffic fines employees on duty receive while driving unroadworthy vehicles.
• All the employees acting in budgeted positions should be appointed.
• The commitment of the municipality to deal with the Eskom bill be investigated.
• Messrs Simbarashe Kuona, acting HOD of Technical Services, Kgomotso Duba, acting CFO, Linda Tshabalala, Municipal Manager and Ms Makhazasi Radebe step down.
• The reason for the financial struggle of the municipality be investigated.
• Whether or not the electricity department will be outsourced, made public.
• Attend to the library, as well as the fire department and parks and recreation.
• The role of HR Manager, Mr Jabulane Mtsweni, be explained.
According to Mr Sipho Mkwanazi, municipal spokesman, they are aware of the memorandum.
“We have scheduled a meeting with the union to discuss their grievances this week,” Mr Mkwanazi said.
