Council reaches agreement with Eskom

SECUNDA – The Govan Mbeki Municipality has reached an agreement with Eskom about the millions they owe the power utility.
Eskom said in a statement that it will cut the power of 20 defaulting municipalities, of which the Govan Mbeki Municipality is one, on 5 June.
Ms Lindi Masina, executive mayor, announced the agreement on Thursday, 28 May at a council meeting.
She said however, the municipality has to comply consistently with the payment agreement on a monthly basis.
Ms Masina said if the agreement is not honoured, Eskom will immediately go ahead with power cuts without any notice.
She said the council is doing everything in their power to make sure the agreement is adhere to.
“The municipality has also suspended all non-core activities, such as trips to non important meetings and the provision of refreshments at meetings, in an attempt to keep up with their arrangement with Eskom.”
She also slammed consumers who do not pay for their municipal services.
“We are faced with a challenge because of the culture of non payment of services, as well as electricity theft.
“It is a shame that even certain businesses who make millions daily, do not pay their municipal accounts.”
She urged the councillors to go to their communities and encourage residents about the importance of paying for municipal services.
The Ridge Times contacted Eskom to ask about the payment agreement and the power utility confirmed that they have reached an agreement with the Govan Mbeki Municipality.
Eskom however declined to make public the conditions of the agreement as this, according to them, is confidential.
