Pensioners robbed of cash
Pensioners feel bad that the people who were supposed to help, are laughing at them.
HIGHVELD – Pensioners of the Govan Mbeki Municipal area are complaining about deductions done by the South African Social Security Association (SASSA) without their knowledge.
Most of the deductions, taken monthy, are for prepaid airtime.
These deductions began last year and when they asked SASSA officials, they were told to go to the police station and make an affidavit.
“We went to the police station in eMbalenhle and when we arrived, the police were laughing at us and passing our papers to each other.
“Some of the pensioners I was with, left without making any statement.
“When I checked my SASSA paper, it was on the floor and I picked it up and left without making a statement,” said one pensioner.
The pensioners are upset because the people who are supposed to help them, laughed at them.
Some pensioners said they did make statements and submitted it to the SASSA offices, but the deductions are still being done.
Other pensioners get up to R400 deducted for prepaid airtime and they are afraid that one day they will wake up to find that they have nothing no money should this scam continue.
Mr Senzeni Ngubeni, SASSA Senior Manager of Communication and Marketing, said they are trying to find solutions to assist the beneficiaries in distress.
