Residents will be able to sell recycable material on their doorstep
Buy Back Centre will improve health standards and living conditions and create a clean and healthy environment.
The Department of Environmental Affairs handed over the Buy Back Centre at Extension 26 on Friday, 5 June.
This R70-m project aims at contributing towards the social upliftment of the local communities by creating permanent jobs and alleviating poverty, both formally and informally.
Ms Betty Thabethe said it will improve health standards and living conditions that will lead to a clean and healthy environment.
“It will minimise the waste volumes disposed of at the landfill sites.
“It is meeting the national strategy objective, which is to promote waste minimisation, reuse, recycling and recovery of waste.”
The centre will collect cardboard, paper, plastic, cans and glass that will be sold to recycling companies.

Ms Thabethe said the level of poverty will be decreased because people will sell recyclables to the Buy Back Centre and be able to feed their families.
She encouraged residents to separate and remove recyclables from the household waste in order to sell clean recyclables to the Buy Back Centre.
“Through hard work and resilience this business will continue to grow, thereby creating more sustainable jobs.”
Ms Lindi Masina, executive mayor, thanked the Department of Environmental Affairs for the donations.
She said the centre will boost the locals financially and that it will contribute towards keeping the area clean.
“I urge our people to look after this property and protect it from vandals.
“Our people will now make money from waste.
“This will definitely empower our people.
“We are now equipped to protect our environment better.
“Let us make it our culture to keep our environment clean for the next generation.”
Ms Masina said the project will soon be officially opened and the members will be invited to learn more about the centre.
Members of the Mayoral Committee, councillors, municipal officials and DEA officials were also present.
